Hi everybody!! I know i havent posted in a REALLY long time- but i have a question for a friend at work. My fiance got back from the sandbox a long time ago and i never had a list of things that were allowed to be sent- i just sent things i knew he needed or would want that i knew would be acceptable... sooo now that her husband has been sent over there- she was wondering if there was an actual list somewhere of when you could/could not send things... like chocolate (i told her i just never sent chocolate to be safe)... maybe like a website or something??? Her husband just left recently and REALLY wants to start with the whole care package thing to keep her busy =) Thanks for any suggestions!!
Christi

| They're not allowed to have pork products or porn. You can't mail weapons either and I don't think you're supposed to mail liquids, although I did mail hand sanitizer which is bordering on a liquid. :P Anything that melts easily is out just because of common sense. Hope that helps!

I think that's all---except weapons. Not many of us tuck those in though. LOL. "Here's a nice extra machine gun, dear, to keep you safe."
I used to have a really good website with care package ideas but I don't remember it now. I wish I could so ya'll could check it out.

| I sent my man those instant cold packs because they get so hot..he likes those a lot. ALso put anything you think may melt into plastic baggies. So it doesn't ruin the rest of the package. I send something homemade like brownies, cookies, each time as well...he shares them but at least he knwos i"m thinking about him!

You made it through one more day out of harms way. I feel so helpless sometimes I want to cry. Tomorrow scares me to death. So I hit my knees beside the bed. If I pray hard enough. If luck stays with us. If I have just enough faith. If wishes really do come true and I spend all mine on you. Maybe you'll be safe. .... I miss my Airman!

| you can send choclate just make sure it is between the months of late spet. and early may. you can not send alchool as well or any thing with the alchool symbol on it. the best thing is to ask what to send over. sometimes you send something they have a lot of so they just give it away or put in the place they get the mail from. by the end of the deployment a lot of things get tossed. some of things my husband and his unit has tossed, or will, or even gave away inculdes but limited to TP, CANDY, FOOD, FOOT POWDER, ETC.

Another issue in regard to care packages is how to send them, since that can be even more costly than what goes inside. Last October the US Postal Service created Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes. The rate on these is $7.70 for everything you can fit inside the box without distorting or breaking it! Although the boxes say for domestic use only (inside the USA), they can be used for APO addresses since you are really only paying for shipping to places like NY where the military then takes over. The boxes come in a couple of sizes and are available free from the Post Office (you can check their website to get dimensions). I have packed heavier items in these boxes and they average 8-9 pounds. If this were sent in an ordinary cardboard box shipped from my location the cost would have been over $20 instead of $7.70. I have packed the lighter weight but bulkier items in larger boxes--that way you don't spend the flat rate to send things like paper towels.
And, don't forget the worst part--the customs forms that have to be filled out and attached to the parcel. Pick them up at the Post Office, too. Every item, its weight, value, etc., has to be recorded. It is much easier to do this BEFORE you seal the box. Remember, any box can be opened for inspection. In my experience, it took 2-4 weeks for him to receive these in Iraq. So, you need a bit of lead time for items that he might run out of. Good luck!
