Waltz with Bashir is an Israeli animated film documenting the effect the 1982 massacre in Lebanon had on an Israeli soldier. From its reviews, I see most people commenting and debating about the political message of the film, but I think the movie digs much deeper and creates a powerful narrative which comments on the effects of war in general. The movie is about a guy who cannot seem to recall any of his memories pertaining to his participation in the 1982 invasion. Throughout the movie, he contacts old war buddies of his to find out what really happened and what his role was in the whole ordeal.
Through wonderful animation and dialogue, the film captures many of the various effects war has on the youth that aren't usually discussed. The fact that the main character didn't have any memory of his involvement shows great insight into how his mind automatically warped his reality just so he can cope with what happened and go on living. This insight is given more substance through the film as it shows how the naivety and ignorance of kids pertaining to the trauma of violence (they were no older than 18-20) can alter their perception of life forever. In a time when our country is involved in multiple "official" wars and even more invasions that the government refuses to call a war, and in a state where we rarely hear of the violence anymore in the media - this a great film to think about psychological toll of war on our youth as well as all the other consequences war brings to its survivors.
