To say hard childhood is an understatement (I don't want to give it away).
I do agree that some people are taking it as only people with "issues" are into that sort of lifestyle, but the main character eventually also gets into it, and she's not "damaged, demented, sick" or anything, but I think people tend to forget that side of the story as well. For me possibly I guess I don't see those who engage in BDSM as damaged, or maybe I'm just more open, so I don't have that stereotype. That's like when people say women who are strippers have "daddy issues" when in fact I've had many friends who have stripped and have terrific fathers- so that stereotype goes out the window. Even when we discussed the series in that book club they did touch on it, but they only said that they didn't like that it implied that people with that lifestyle do it because they have "issues." But the words "sick and demented" never really came up in our 2 hour discussion (seriously the longest discussion we've ever had about a book).
Like I said before, it's a book, it's fiction, it's not life changing, but it's interesting. I've read the series once and now I've moved on with my life I recommend anyone who is interested read it to check it out, but that's about it. I borrowed a copy from a friend, who bought it used lol.
And btw love love love Anne Rice's novels. Heard she found God recently, read her Jesus book and sadly couldn't get into it. While it was written well enough (as far as I did read) I miss her other books.

Ah! You've read Sleeping Beauty?
Not long ago Anne Rice announced she left the Church. Her son Chris is gay, you see, and after all that noise they mad over gay marriage, birth control, and the child molestation scandal, she said she'd lost faith. I don't know if she completely became an atheist, but she left the church.
I was glad to hear that.

I went and read about that- no I didn't realize she renounced it- but she's still religious- she still believe's in Christ- she just isn't living her life through organized religion any longer.
No I didn't read those books - but I am going to look into them! I've read so many of her books, the vampire series, the Mayfair Witches, and a few of her random ones, but not the sleeping beauty series- but I will now! Probably because I didn't realize they are under the pseudonym A. N. Roquelaure.
Only problem with erotic literature is halfway through I put it down and attack the hubby- not that he's complaining!

Hahaha...if you read the Beauty series, you may find yourself attacking him with whips and chains.
Just kidding!! But that series really does get deep into the mindset of both dominants and submissives. When you read it, compare that with how Shades of Gray portrays the mindset of it's characters. I'll bet the farm it's totally different.
There is a huge gap in the mindset of people who just play at kink, and those who really live it. Like someone said, for some it's an orientation.
Be sure to PM me after you e read it- I really want to know if you liked it.
