Best places for an interracial couple to live posted: 10/14/07 at 3:33 AM

I think it would be interesting to hear peoples opinions on where are good places for interracial couples to live. Places that show less opposition to it, whatever the case may be, just throw in your opinion.
I am originally from PA about an hour outside of pittsburgh. It was a small town, but not a very easy area for interracial couples. A city like pittsburgh or closer to the city may be better, but i'm not really the "city girl" type.
Right now i live in Alexandria, LA. It's obviously in the deep south...and again, not so great for the interracial couple. People are either really country or really strict religious, which both seem to be opposed to the mixing of races. We really don't get open discrimination, we just don't see a lot of other mixed couples and most bars and churches (both ends of the spectrum) are either 'white' or 'black'... so that makes life a little uncomfortable at times.
My b/f is from Springfield MO and it seems like a really great place for mixed couples. It's not really a city, but a bigger town with lots to do and i never felt out of place or like i was being looked at. I've never lived there...and i mean you'll find both opposition and friendly folks everywhere, but it seemed like a pretty open area.
Right now we are looking to move not immediately, but in a few months, so i was just curious to hear different opinions.

| I live Norfolk, Virginia, we have been here for 6 yrs. We are navy people and there are a lot of diverse people here. We haven't had any problems from people here, I see a lot of interracial couples here. Every now and then I might still get a look but I know it isn't perfect here, it isn't as bad as where we met. We met in Alabama in college and was dating for a long time. We had some very bad times there. I have lived in Chicago, Il for a while and we didn't have any problems there. Washington D.C or its surrounding areas seem to be a good place for interracial couple, when we visit the city on occasion I see a lot of couples and we also had no issues. It seems that maybe bigger cities might be better to live at because of the diverse people.

I have lived in Western Pa (where people are semi tolerant..at least in the college scene)....Buffalo NY (NOT TOLERANT, old school yankee racism)...and Baltimore, MD, which is high population of AA's.
Upon meeting us, most people are great. (minus my mgr at my job,but thats a different post)..however we have been treated deferentially at restaurants, clubs, etc
If I go out to a 'black clubl' with my female black friend without my partner...I get called 'snowflake, snowwhite, etc'
that gets annoying after awhile
Ditto to PP on DC being pretty open...I know some people that live in that area and are pretty okay with it
all of Maryland is very high cost of living btw!
